Today I have a post about something I was thinking about and this is the idea that we do not need numbers until you need math.

Imagine looking down at your hand as if you were observing your hand with that intention. You look at your hand and see one thing. You then move your fingers and that one thing is moving but if each finger can move separately or all at the same time this is a different observation while using your same hand as an example of what can experienced.

It was one thing and that one thing started moving and that what was moving was more than that one thing.

You do not need to know the concept of numbers, mathematics or quantity to know there is a difference in experience while observing your hand.

You do not need to describe “one” hand as if it was how many you were looking at. You do not need to know that there are “four” fingers and “one” thumb moving to tell that there is a difference between what it was you were looking at having different things that were moving. You do not need to know the name of what it was you were looking at that began to move or the names of the different things that were moving to know the difference that your hand includes your fingers but your fingers are also not your hand.

You could give a detailed description of this observation without using numbers but you would also be aware that it involved multiple things you could consider.

There are several concepts you might take away from this observation of your hand.

One concept is that of “Quantity” (an amount or number of something). By looking at your fingers on your hand you have an example of something that is more than one with the comparison of your hand after moving your fingers compared to before you began to move your fingers when initially observing your hand as a single object. Not that it just looked different but you could see more than just one thing moving knowing that each finger moving could be seen as moving different things even though they are attached to the same hand. If you were watching someone else do this experiment you could see the fingers in a way that without considering the attachment to the hand, if you were to say how many different things you observed moving you might not say only one.

Another concept would be what a “Description” (detailed information about something) is and how what is used to describe something is a reason that numbers can be used outside of Mathematics.

If there was a word for each number that was used in a way to describe what would represent a specific quantity, that could be the only reason that you would need that word. For example, this person is 4 years old and this person is 10 years old could be this person is “word” years old and this person is “different word” years old with those 2 words representing the amount of years that person is old.

Mathematics however also has a purpose. Although numbers can be used as part of a description they can also have a function that is different that a detailed description providing the information necessary to give you what would used in order to describe something.

For example a backyard that is 20 feet long and 20 feet wide has a “Area” of 400 square feet. You could say to someone that the backyard is 20 feet by 20 feet (20′ x 20′) and that could be a way to describe it but if someone needs to know the area of that yard you first need to know before you could say 400 square feet that you must multiply the length and width of the yard to provide that answer.

To describe a person in a black t shirt, you need know what a T shirt is and the color black before you could provide that description but there is no formula similar to the formula used to find the “Area” of something (Length multiplied by Width). You only to need to recall from memory what a T shirt is and what the color black looks like to use these words in a discription. The “Area” of something is information that does not utlilize the memory to recall what something always is to say what it is but is information that needs a formula in addition to the memory of how to apply that formula in order to provide as a description.

It is interesting how numbers can be used to represent quantity but they do not need to be.
