MARCH 04 2025
(NOVEMBER 01 2024 MAKE UP)
GOOD MORNING TO THE SON AND THE SKY❕👋🏼
LAGO / LAC = “LAKE” IN SPANISH 🇲🇽 / FRENCH 🇫🇷
Today for you I have a post about “The Great Lakes”.
The Great Lakes are the only freshwater sources of fish I will eat outside of the ocean, because they taste less like pond water.
I also prefer swimming in the Great Lakes over any other body of water including the ocean because cleanliness and safety from marine predators.
I also like how close we are to Lake Michigan and should visit more often to gaze into a horizon that is the furthest away and nothing but water.
Here are some interesting facts about The Great Lakes:
1. Largest Freshwater System: The Great Lakes — Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario — make up the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth by total surface area, covering about 94,600 square miles (245,000 km²).
2. 20% of the World’s Freshwater: They contain about 20% of the world’s surface freshwater and about 84% of North America’s freshwater.
3. Lake Superior’s Size: Lake Superior is the largest, deepest, and coldest of the five. It’s the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area and could hold the water from all the other Great Lakes combined — with room to spare.
4. Shipwrecks Galore: The Great Lakes have thousands of shipwrecks, with estimates ranging between 6,000 and 8,000. Lake Superior alone is home to the famous wreck of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in 1975.
5. Border Between Two Countries: The Great Lakes form part of the border between the United States and Canada, touching eight U.S. states and the Canadian province of Ontario.
6. Unique Ecosystem: They support a rich and diverse ecosystem with more than 3,500 species of plants and animals, including many found nowhere else in the world.
7. Lake Michigan’s Uniqueness: Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake entirely within the United States. The others are shared with Canada.
8. Formation: The Great Lakes were formed about 14,000 years ago during the last Ice Age, when melting glaciers carved out the basins and filled them with water.
9. Coastline Length: The total shoreline of the Great Lakes is about 10,900 miles (17,549 km) — longer than the coastline of the entire continental United States.
10. Weather Impact: The lakes have a huge influence on weather in the region, creating lake-effect snow in winter and moderating temperatures in nearby areas year-round.
What fact did you find most interesting? I was surprised to find out the total length of the Great Lakes coastline was greater than the continental coastline.
