Today for you I have a post about The Super Mario Bros. because March 10 is Mario Day with the date looking like Mario MAR10.

I have mentioned Mario in a previous post but that post was more about video games and this post is about the Super Mario Brothers specifically.

It is the “oldest” video game character that I still play today dating back to my earliest memories of gaming.

I remember playing Mario on the first video game console I ever played on and with each era of new consoles Mario was present or was brought back into the mix and remains to this current day.

Here are some interesting facts about one of the world’s most famous plumbers:

	1.	Mario’s first appearance wasn’t in Super Mario Bros.: Mario debuted in Donkey Kong (1981) as “Jumpman.” He was a carpenter trying to rescue his girlfriend, Pauline, from the giant ape.
	2.	Mario became a plumber because of the pipes: In Super Mario Bros. (1985), the underground pipe-based levels influenced Mario’s profession switch from carpenter to plumber — which just made more sense in the context of the game.
	3.	Mario’s design was shaped by technical limitations: His iconic mustache, hat, and overalls were practical choices to make his features stand out on the low-resolution screen of the early ’80s. The mustache helped define his face, the hat avoided the need for animating hair, and the overalls made his arm movements more visible.
	4.	The birth of the Mushroom Kingdom: The idea of a fantastical world full of pipes, magic mushrooms, and turtles was inspired by Japanese folklore and fairy tales. The power-up mushrooms were partly inspired by the idea of mushrooms having mystical, growth-enhancing properties.
	5.	The Super Mario Bros. theme song is legendary: Koji Kondo’s “Ground Theme” is one of the most recognizable pieces of video game music ever made. It was one of the first times a game’s music changed dynamically with gameplay — speeding up when time runs low, for example.
	6.	The Minus World glitch: The original Super Mario Bros. has a famous glitch that lets players access “World -1,” an endless underwater level. It’s a programming bug that became one of the game’s most well-known secrets.
	7.	Mario went 3D in 1996: Super Mario 64 was a revolutionary leap, introducing open-world 3D platforming and setting a standard for the genre. It remains one of the most influential games of all time.
	8.	He’s had a ton of jobs: Beyond plumbing, Mario has been a doctor (Dr. Mario), a kart racer (Mario Kart), an athlete (Mario Tennis, Mario Golf), an artist (Mario Paint), and even a referee (Punch-Out!!).
	9.	Super Mario Galaxy defied gravity: The Super Mario Galaxy games (2007, 2010) added a creative twist to the platforming formula by incorporating spherical, gravity-based levels, where Mario could run upside down on planets and deal with shifting gravitational pulls.
	10.	Mario went open-world in Super Mario Odyssey (2017): This game combined the open-ended exploration of Mario 64 with innovative mechanics, like Mario’s sentient hat, Cappy, which lets him possess enemies and objects.
	11.	Mario’s still evolving today: With games like Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023) bringing fresh gameplay ideas, creative power-ups, and new art styles, Mario continues to stay innovative while staying true to his roots.
	12.	The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) was a huge success: After the infamous 1993 live-action adaptation, the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie was much more faithful to the games and became one of the highest-grossing animated films ever.
	13.	He’s a gaming icon worldwide: Mario’s cultural impact goes beyond games — he’s appeared in cartoons, comics, movies, and theme parks like Super Nintendo World.
