Today, for you, I have a post about the compass but not the kind used in art but they type of compass used for navigation.

I remember having a compass when I was younger and it seemed like it was a toy but also something else. I do not remember what it looked like but I remember being familiar with a compass before I was issued a compass in the military to assist in land navigation.

In combination with a map the compass was used to navigate from where you were standing to various points on the map.

To be honest I do not remember much about that time with respect to details however I do remember being able to get to the specific points along with my squad members to complete the objective. I still have that compass today.

Before the compass there were other methods that were used in order to navigate, one of which I have mentioned on a previous post and that method was to use the stars at night as reference for position and direction. You can still use the stars today without a compass.

If you are ever lost in the woods and have the ability to see the stars, locate the “North Star” which is the brightest star in the sky and orientate yourself facing north and then choose a direction you believe to be the closet direction that would exit the woods. From time to time check your direction be relocating the North Star to be sure you are still heading in the right direction.
