Today, for you, I have a post about the letter O for Otter.

One thing I find awesome about otters is that they are known to hold “hands” while sleeping so they do not float away from each other while asleep because they sleep floating on their backs in the water.

I have seen otters several times but while at a zoo and not in the wild that I can remember.

There are a number of mammals that spend most of their life in the water including otters. I find them interesting for multiple reasons including they look like they know how to have fun.

I know that they are amazing swimmers and can travel through the water in ways a human never could and they have been known on occasion to hop out of the water and take unguarded food from unsuspecting humans.

Here are some interesting facts about otters:

🛠️ 1. They Use Tools!

Otters are one of the few animals that use tools. They crack open clams and shellfish with rocks, sometimes balancing the rock on their belly while floating!

🐾 2. They Hold Hands When Sleeping

Sea otters hold hands in the water so they don’t float away from each other while sleeping. It's called a "raft" of otters when they’re all snuggled together!

🧼 3. Their Fur Is Super Dense

Otters have the densest fur of any animal—up to 1 million hairs per square inch! It keeps them warm in cold water since they don’t have blubber like whales or seals.

🐟 4. They’re Great Swimmers

Otters can stay underwater for several minutes and swim up to 7 miles per hour. River otters even do belly slides on ice and snow for fun!

👶 5. Otter Moms Are Very Protective

Otter pups are born with their eyes closed and can't swim right away. Moms wrap them in kelp to keep them safe while hunting.
