Today, for you, I have a post about the Statue of Liberty.

Liberty is another word for freedom or independence.

I have been to New York City but I did not see the Statue of Liberty. The statue is actually located on Ellis Island in New York which apparently was only a few miles from where I was.

One day I plan on going back to New York and I will see the world famous statue then.

Here are some interesting facts about the Statue of Liberty:
🏗️ 1. She Was a Gift from France
• The statue was a gift from France to the United States, meant to commemorate the centennial of American independence (1776–1876) and to celebrate friendship between the two nations.
• It was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and the iron framework was engineered by Gustave Eiffel, who later built the Eiffel Tower.

🌎 2. Her Full Name Has Meaning
• Her official name is “Liberty Enlightening the World.”
• She represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty — a symbol of freedom from tyranny and oppression.

🔨 3. Built Like a Giant Puzzle
• The statue was constructed in France and shipped to New York in 350 pieces, packed into 214 crates.
• It was then reassembled on Liberty Island (then called Bedloe’s Island) in 1886.

🔥 4. The Torch Was Once a Lighthouse
• From 1886 to 1902, the torch actually served as a working lighthouse, with light visible for about 24 miles (39 km) out to sea.
• The U.S. Lighthouse Board managed it — but it wasn’t very effective due to poor brightness.

⚖️ 5. Everything Has Symbolism
• Torch = enlightenment and progress
• Crown’s 7 rays = the seven seas and seven continents
• Broken chains at her feet = freedom from oppression
• Tablet = law and reason — it’s inscribed with “JULY IV MDCCLXXVI” (July 4, 1776)

🧱 6. She’s Made of Copper — and Changed Color
• The statue’s exterior is made of 3/32-inch copper sheets (about the thickness of two pennies).
• She originally shone bright reddish-brown, but over time, oxidation turned her into the famous green patina that actually protects the metal underneath.

• Total height (base to torch): 305 feet (93 meters)
• Just the statue alone: 151 feet (46 meters)
• Weight: around 225 tons (450,000 pounds)

🗝️ 8. The Face Was Modeled After Bartholdi’s Mother
• Sculptor Bartholdi used his mother, Charlotte Bartholdi, as inspiration for Liberty’s face — symbolizing maternal compassion and strength.

💡 9. She Almost Ended Up in Egypt
• Before America, Bartholdi proposed a similar statue called “Egypt Carrying the Light to Asia” — a robed woman holding a torch at the Suez Canal’s entrance.
• Egypt declined due to cost, so he adapted the idea for the United States.

🕊️ 10. A Symbol for Immigrants
• For millions arriving by ship in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Statue of Liberty was the first thing they saw — a beacon of hope as they entered through Ellis Island.

Not many statues that I am aware of have as many interesting different types of facts.
