EL AÑO NUEVO LUNAR {el on-yo new-way-vo loo-nair} / le Nouvel An Lunaire { loo noo-vel awn loo-nair} = “LUNAR NEW YEAR” IN SPANISH 🇲🇽 / FRENCH 🇫🇷
I LOVE YOU 💓
Howl you doing❓
I hope everything is GREAT with you and at home 🥰
Today, for you, I have a post about the recent Lunar New Year holiday (began February 17 2026).
This is the year of the “Fire Horse”.
We have discussed different calendars on the blog including a recent “This Day In History” fact also having to do with calendars.
Today’s focus will be on the Lunar Calendar (or Lunisolar Calendar which takes in account the moon phase and position of sun).
I noticed on my calendar app that today was a holiday. Actually there were a couple of holidays happening on that date. There is Ramadan (which we have mentioned on our blog previously) and the Lunar New Year (which has also been mentioned).
I decided to share some facts I found on the Lunar New Year holiday. I found many of these facts to be interesting and I hope you do too.
🐎 1. It’s the Year of the Fire Horse — a rare event
• In 2026, the Chinese zodiac year is the Year of the Fire Horse, combining the Horse sign with the Fire element in the traditional 60-year cycle.
• This specific Fire Horse combination hasn’t happened since 1966, so it’s seen as a very rare and powerful year in folklore and astrology.
📅 2. The celebrations have just begun
• Chinese New Year (also called Lunar New Year or Spring Festival) began on February 17, 2026 and lasts for about 15 days, ending with the Lantern Festival.
• Many countries with East and Southeast Asian communities mark the holiday with parades, family gatherings, and cultural events during this time.
🧧 3. Huge traditions and family gatherings
• Family is a big focus — many people have special reunion dinners on New Year’s Eve, give red envelopes with money (lai see) for luck, and decorate with red to symbolize good fortune.
• Red clothing, lanterns, and festive decorations help “welcome” good luck and drive away bad luck, based on an ancient legend about a monster called Nian.
🧨 4. World’s largest annual human migration continues
• Each year around this festival, millions of people travel across China to be with family — often called the world’s largest human migration as factories shut down and people go home.
🌍 5. Celebrations around the world
• Countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and others with large Chinese communities also celebrate with parades, dragon and lion dances, street festivals, and cultural performances.
🕺 6. Traditional and modern cultural highlights
• Traditional dragon and lion dances are a big part of the festivities, and the skill and effort of performers are increasingly recognized in big city celebrations.
• In some places, newer cultural performances (like fancy robot shows) are being added to the celebrations too.
I thought the fact about the “world’s largest migration” was interesting. To me that concept speaks to the enormous population of China. Kinda cool to think about the logistics of that many people moving with a similar intent in a “shared space” that space being China. It would be interesting to see an overhead time lapse view of the “migration”.
