GOOD MORNING TO THE SON AND THE SKY❕👋🏼

I LOVE YOU 💓

Howl you doing❓

I hope everything is GREAT with you and at home 🥰

Today, for you, I have a post about interesting things I learned about the “Evergreen” tree.

My favorite types of trees are Evergreen trees, the type you would get during Christmas like a Pine or Spruce.

I remember going to visit your great grandpa (my mom’s dad) when I was a kid and there was a near by elementary school that was walking distance that had a little “forrest” of Evergreens.

I would walk to the school with your aunt and uncle and our cousins and it would smell great along the way (I like the smell of Pine trees). It was like walking on a pillow because all of the old pine needles that had fallen from the trees had created a multiple inch thick bed of pine needles.

I also remember as a kid laying under the Christmas tree once it was finished being decorated and look at the tree through the bottom of the tree and see the lights shining through the needles and branches while smelling the scent of pine (resin is the “sap” that contains the terpenes that produce the pine smell that we detect when approaching a pine tree or downwind of pine trees in a way that you can smell them before you can see them.

Here are some interesting facts about Evergreens:

The leaves of an Evergreen are known as needles. The shape although different than what one might think of when visualizing a leaf, remains in fact a leaf. The needle functions the same how leafs would ordinarily function however the “needle’s” differences being the result of the needle bearing species of tree’s previous adaptation to frigid climates.

The needles have a waxy coating (cuticle) that protects them from freezing. In addition to being able to withstand winter the needles last 2-10 years allowing the tree to do during the winter what other trees would not by the needles providing the ability to continue Photosynthesis through the dim, frigid winter months.

The needles also as leaves non needle shaped allow the tree to breathe by collecting carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.

Some of the design features keep the tree breathing and stay warm enough to not get “snowed in”. The shape of the tree is that of a cone. This is great for snow not having a flat surface to land and accumulate in addition to the shape and gravity prevent the accumulation of snow with a steep angle so that the snow flakes “cascade” along the tree until eventually coming to a halt rather than “landing” on the surface of the tree the snowflake first makes contact.

Any snow that would eventually accumulate on a needle is still significantly less than a “typical” leaf having a fraction of the surface area there would be on an Oak leaf for example.

These differences in a needle shaped leaf rather than a different shape of leaf give the tree the best odds of survival when most of its existence it is “snowed in”.

Being snowed in for a tree is like sleeping with your head under your blanket at night. You can breathe under your blanket but you can feel the air is heavier compared to how it feels when breathing without being under the blanket and you can also tell which type of air you would prefer (I know I prefer fresh air). When under a blanket although you can still breathe, inability to purge the accumulation of carbon dioxide from every time you breathed out (exhaled) the blanket prevented the carbon dioxide from clearing your “pocket” of air that is not refreshed the natural way when you push the air out away from you being all that would be necessary to clear the space for the next breath in (inhale) to not be mostly the same volume of gas (this is the state of oxygen we extract each inhalation however oxygen only makes up a small portion of what comprises the total volume of any breath at the rate of the size of the room and fresh air intake and airflow/exhaust the exchange of carbon dioxide into oxygen causing the tree to have less available each breathe by continuing to breathe in what it has breathed out rather than fresh air each breath.

Tomorrow I will make a follow up post on Evergreens to share some more interesting facts and concepts.
