Today, for you, I have a post inspired by the “This day in history” below:

THIS DAY IN HISTORY: SEPTEMBER 25 1956 the first transatlantic telephone cable (TAT-1) was inaugurated, enabling direct voice calls between the U.S. and Europe

I have made post on our blog previously about communication and this one is focusing on the first time a live voice call was made an entire ocean away.

The majority of the earth is covered in water (ocean water mostly) and the concept of being able to talk to somebody an ocean coast away as if they were standing next to you on the same beach is mind boggling.

I can only imagine the engineering feat required to accomplish this not to mention the labor involved.

You know how you can talk with two paper cups with a string attached to them and hear each other? Imagine that across an ocean and it actually worked! Crazy right?

I am fascinated with the history of communication. Every thing including language, technology, the written word, body language and facial expressions and the future of communication.

My favorite type of communication is the kind that includes you.

Today, for you, I have a post about my after photo from a few months ago.

First off I wouldn’t have known for sure if I was spelling “selfie” right until I saw it spelled today for our word of the day because today was the first type I wrote or typed it that I know of.

A few things have changed since the previous photo and most of them not physical.

I am in a new semester at school and things are going well just like last semester but this semester I am taking three more classes.

I have made more progress getting closer to spending time with you and for that I am excited and happy.

I will do another photo in 3 months and for the each solstice and equinox.

I am optimistic I will have even more reasons to be smiling in the next photo.

Today, for you, I have a post about the holiday known as “Rosh Hashanah”.

I noticed this morning on my calendar that today was the holiday Rosh Hashanah and to be honest the only thing I knew about it was it was a Jewish holiday.

After reading some facts about the holiday I found a few things interesting which I will share after a few facts on the holiday:
1. Biblical Origin – It’s mentioned in the Hebrew Bible (Leviticus 23:23–25) as a day of rest, trumpet blasts, and offerings.
2. Shofar Blowing – A central tradition is blowing the shofar (ram’s horn), which serves as a spiritual wake-up call to self-reflection and repentance.
3. Two-Day Celebration – In most of the world, Rosh Hashanah is observed for two days, even though the Bible only designates one.
4. Head of the Year – “Rosh Hashanah” literally means “Head of the Year” in Hebrew, marking the start of the Jewish calendar year.
5. Ten Days of Awe – It begins the Ten Days of Awe (or Repentance), which lead up to Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism.
6. Apples and Honey – People eat apples dipped in honey to symbolize the hope for a sweet new year.
7. Tashlich Tradition – Many Jewish communities perform Tashlich, where they symbolically cast away sins by throwing bread crumbs into a flowing body of water.
8. Different from January 1st – Unlike the secular New Year’s celebrations, Rosh Hashanah is not about parties—it’s a time of reflection, prayer, and renewal.
9. World’s Birthday – According to Jewish tradition, Rosh Hashanah marks the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve, making it the “birthday of the world.”
10. Unique Greeting – The common greeting is “Shanah Tovah” (שנה טובה), which means “Good Year.” Some say the longer form: “L’shanah tovah tikatevu v’tichatemu” (“May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year”).

As far as I know I have never heard of a holiday celebrating the birth of the earth which is a pretty cool concept.

I also did not know that there was a Jewish observation of the beginning of the year.

Today, for you, I have a post about my post from the other day about misunderstandings and assumptions.

Today I didn’t have my bus pass when I walked to the bus stop.

I asked the bus driver if he accepted apple pay and he said “come on the bus and I will give you a ride”.

So I got on the bus and before getting off I asked for a transfer ticket.

Just before heading back home I was at the bus stop and noticed the ticket said “No Return Trips Allowed”.

I got on the bus and the bus driver told me that the ticket was for the wrong direction but she still gave me a ride.

Did anybody do anything wrong?

No.

But when I got on the bus the first time I knew it was possible I might not be riding the bus back.

However and luckily the kindness of the bus drivers gave me a ride to where I had to go and back home so it wasn’t an issue and although I could have walked back for some not having a ride back would have been enough to not be able to accept a free ride to the place I was going but I still saw the lesson in thinking about saying yes to something that can be good in the moment but make things harder down the road.

So consider when you make assumptions one lesson and another lesson is to think about how what you do now can affect what you will experience later especially when things will seem easier in the moment.

Today, for you, I have a post about the difference between misunderstanding something (innocent) and making an assumption (mistake) when it comes to a negative experience.

If somebody tells you to meet them at their house and knock on the back door when you arrive it is possible to show up, locate the back door and knock when you arrive and not do what the person asked. If the person said knock on the back door when you arrive and then you leave after you did so you didn’t do anything wrong. But the person actually wanted you to knock on the back door so they could open it and let you in to spend time together. You didn’t know this and that was not a mistake but a misunderstanding.

The other person made an assumption that by telling you what they did that you would also know they wanted to hang out.

In this made up scenario no harm was done but the assumption could have led to a negative experience that could have been avoided if the person that made an assumption instead clarified their intention and/or if you were to ask if what they were asking of you included anything else (but did not require knowing anything else to honor the request).

We never try to misunderstand but we can ask ourself if we are making an assumption when we are or are about to make one.

Today, for you, I have a post about enjoying your time indoors on account of the weather not being hospitable to outdoor activities.

I encourage spending time outdoors when it makes sense like on a day with beautiful weather.

It is not always “nice” outside and on those days it is nice to have some things to do that do not depend on the weather.

It is also nice to have things you can do that do not depend on the weather that also allow you to use previous experiences to build upon your ability to do that activity.

A few things come to mind that this post could apply to.

One type of activity is the type that allows you to enjoy the time spent with that activity while getting better by applying what you have learned thus far with winning or losing not a focus but having fun while improving.

Chess is a good example of this and so is drawing. The more you draw or play chess the better you will get and there does not need to be an outcome that you require to enjoy the time spent while doing that activity.

Another type of activity is the kind that requires a long period of time to complete.

Some examples of this would be reading a book that takes hours or even days to read that you could pick up where you left off and make progress towards completion each time you engage in that activity.

You always have the ability to do with whatever is available what you desire but you will only have the ability to build upon the progress of something that you have already started and when deciding what it is that you want to do having the option of continuing progress in addition to starting something fresh is nice to have whether you want to or not.

Today, for you, I have a post about what is going on this weekend near my building.

This weekend is the music festival called “BLUES FEST” which over 3 days features various blues acts in addition to local shopping vendors and food options among what is available to experience.

I am about to ride the bus somewhere in a moment and when I get back if still available I will hit up the taco stand.

I will also capture an image of what 1 of the 2 stages looks like and perhaps a shot of the lane with the vendors and food options.

I have mentioned this festival before this time last year (I think) and just like then I am grateful there are things near by that are unique to experience throughout the year.

Today, for you, I have a post about a letter I received from my college today.

The letter was to inform me that I had made what is called the “Dean’s List” which is a list of those who have achieved an average grade at the end of the semester that would be an A.

An A can be anything averaging above 90% or higher with all the classes combined.

Last semester as you know I took two classes and I knew I did well and it was nice to open the letter that was a reminder of how I have and am approaching my experience with higher education.

I actually have 2 semesters in a row now that put me in the category of the “Dean’s List” however I only took one class the previous semester yet it feels good to have now a streak of success with respect to my intent to not just go to college but to apply myself while taking classes.

This post is meant to highlight the effort that was present throughout the previous semesters and at the same time point out that I am getting better at being a student and yes I have been applying myself but with more experience what I am able to do when applying myself is becoming more of a positive impact.

School is currently going well and I look forward to sharing with you an update in the near future with what has been my experience so far this semester.

I hope you are applying yourself at school and even more I hope that you are enjoying your experience while you are applying yourself.

Today, for you, I have a post about banks.

I opened my first bank account if my memory serves me accurately when I was 15 years old while I had a job as a “bag boy” at a local grocery store. This was not my first job (paperboy route was my first job) but this was the first time I had a place to cash my paycheck.

You have family who currently works at a bank and believe it or not the ability for someone to say that where they work being a bank has been over 4,000 years❕

The word bank comes form the Italian word “banco” which as you may have noticed above is also how you say “bank” is Spanish.

When banks first emerged it was not only money that was stored at a bank but other valuables including silver, gold and even food like grains.

The first “paper money” like US dollars came from China and previous to this “bank notes” were used to represent a specific amount for a specific intent whether it was a balance or what could be used in a transaction.

The majority of what a modern day American banking experience could look like has only been apart of the history of all banking that has ever occurred for what would be less than 1 percent of the existence of banking.

Digital banking or online banking, debit cards and credit cards and apps attached to your bank have only been something that has been around for decades with some of those things only becoming widely used in the last 20 years.

Banking has been around for thousands of years but what has been and always will be true is people will always have an interest in keeping their money safe and having ways to use what money they have with the ability to keep track of there spending.

Saving money is safe money.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY: SEPTEMBER 17 1969 the first ATM (AUTOMATED TELLER MACHINE) was installed in London, England. I never thought about how long ATMs have been around and all things considered when compared to how long banks have been around ATMs are somewhat of a recent addition to the “banking experience”.

Today, for you, I have a post about respecting your elders.

In my opinion it is always a good thing to be kind.

It is also true that when interacting with someone who is much older than you to keep in mind that just because they are old doesn’t mean they are right and it doesn’t mean they are weak.

What I mean by this is that they are experienced in life that may lend a certain wisdom to what it is they have available to share. It is also possible that they could be wrong about some of their beliefs that they think would apply to you that in fact does not.

Also when it comes to the elderly (grandmas and grandpas or great grandmas and grandpas) they may be strong in ways that you would not expect.

Although maybe not physically as strong as they once were, their mind may be stronger than ever.

My point is this, what we may think about the elderly can be true but is not always true in both positive and sometimes negative ways.

Either way, be kind to your elders.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY: SEPTEMBER 16 1620 the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, England heading to New York and would later land on the East coast of what would later the United States of America.
