Today I have a post about tomorrow morning (Thanksgiving Day)
I will be participating in the annual “Turkey Trot 5k” in Downtown Lansing for the 4th time
I have tried to make this an annual tradition and since I started nearly half a decade ago I have participated in the majority of the events
The Turkey Trot is a race for all ages through downtown Lansing with a 5 kilometer distance between start and finish (a little over 3 miles)
There are some who take the race seriously and compete for prizes and ribbons but most people (including myself) go at a comfortable pace without a concern with how long it takes to finish the “race”
I am not a fan of running in cold weather and to be honest not a huge fan of running period yet a slow comfortable jog with headphones playing some music and the energy of the hundreds of people surrounding you with thousands potentially participating is a good vibe
The race is an annual event that is a competitive race as well as a fundraiser for local charities
There are some who dress up in costumes like giant turkeys or Christmas themed costumes like elves and Santa
I will post a picture later from the event

I am interested in Math and will be taking a math class for the first time in years next semester at school
Math is said to be “the language of the universe” and “Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas”
The vast amount of math outside of basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) will ever be in need of memorization thanks to modern technology
Basic math is something we will use throughout our lives for various reasons but luckily once you learn basic math it is rare you will need to think hard when applying it
There are different ways of looking at math and depending on where you grew up perhaps different ways of looking at numbers when applying math
Our country when referring to weight or distance use the “Imperial System” like pounds or miles for example. In other countries the “Metric System” is used like kilometers or kilograms which use units of 10 (1, 10, 100, 1000 etc)
The idea that we are not talking about the same number when referring to our body weight for example is only true without converting one system to another.
1 mile is is roughly 1.6 kilometers and 1 pound is roughly 0.45 kilograms. If a conversion is done you would know that both systems are providing the same answer and the conversion was possible because of math
One concept of math that I find interesting is the concept of “Infinity”.
Infinity is something that is infinite or boundless (goes on forever).
Many things are associated with the concept of infinity like time, outer space and numbers.
What is associated with the concept of infinity are concepts themselves and though you could say numbers go on forever (infinite) you would be right but if the same concept of infinity applies to numbers that applies to time or outer space then the word infinity applies to things that can be proven and also things that can not be proven but are agreements of truth.
How could space ever stop? Is there a wall somewhere that is the end of space? How could time ever stop? If time stopped how would you measure how long it has been stopped?
The difference between the infinity of math and the infinity of another concept is one has a way of being proven in a lifetime where the others are agreements made in a lifetime to be true.
Infinity is how I would describe my LOVE for you in a way that it would be mathematical

Today I have a post that will be a part of what has been shared previously (science) and will be something to expect in the future
My intent is to have a variety of post about STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art & mathematics) like you would learn in school through the extension of my own independent research and interest as well as things I think you might find interesting.
Every post is an extension of my LOVE for you and sometimes a post will be simply a reflection of that
Today I have another science post about the human body, specifically the largest organ of our body, the Epidermis (Skin)
Below are some interesting facts about our skin (source chatGPT)
Human skin is a fascinating and complex organ with many unique properties. Here are some interesting facts about it:
1. Largest Organ of the Body
• Skin is the largest organ, covering about 16% of your body weight and an average surface area of 1.5–2 square meters.
2. Three Main Layers
• Epidermis: The outermost layer that acts as a barrier. • Dermis: The middle layer containing blood vessels, nerves, and sweat glands. • Hypodermis: The innermost layer made of fat and connective tissue, providing insulation and cushioning.
3. Constant Renewal
• The skin regenerates itself roughly every 28 days. Dead skin cells are shed daily, with around 30,000–40,000 cells lost every minute.
4. Color and Melanin
• Skin color is determined by melanin, a pigment produced by melanocytes. Everyone has a similar number of melanocytes, but the amount and type of melanin they produce vary.
5. Barrier Function
• Skin is a crucial barrier, protecting the body from bacteria, viruses, harmful substances, and water loss.
6. Temperature Regulation
• Sweat glands and blood vessels in the skin help regulate body temperature by releasing sweat and adjusting blood flow.
7. Unique Fingerprints
• The patterns on the skin of your fingertips are unique to you and don’t change throughout your life, making them an excellent tool for identification.
8. Sense of Touch
• The skin contains millions of sensory receptors, allowing you to feel touch, pressure, pain, heat, and cold.
9. Elasticity and Strength
• Collagen and elastin in the dermis provide the skin with its strength and elasticity, enabling it to stretch and return to its original shape.
10. Sweat Glands
• The human body has about 2–4 million sweat glands, which can produce up to 3 liters of sweat per hour in extreme conditions.
11. Healing Powers
• Skin has remarkable healing abilities, closing wounds by forming scabs and rebuilding tissue with minimal external aid.
12. Microbiome
• Your skin hosts trillions of microbes, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, which play a role in maintaining skin health and protecting against harmful pathogens.
13. Aging Signs
• As you age, the production of collagen and elastin decreases, leading to wrinkles, sagging, and thinner skin.
14. UV Protection
• Melanin absorbs UV radiation to protect the skin from damage, though prolonged exposure can still cause harm, including sunburn and skin cancer.
15. Goosebumps
• Goosebumps occur when tiny muscles at the base of hair follicles contract, usually in response to cold or emotional stimuli, a vestigial reaction from when humans had more body hair.
Skin is not only a protective shield but also a dynamic system that reflects your overall health. Taking care of it is vital!

Today I have a post about “working smart not hard”
Although working hard is sometimes required what makes more sense sometimes is to work smart
This means consider everything you can that would allow you be more efficient with your time and energy while approaching the task at hand
For example if you had to move a couch from one side of the room to the other and it was so heavy that it required two people without scuffing the floor while dragging there might be a solution
Maybe the couch requires two people to lift off the ground and move but maybe by yourself you can lift up half the couch while the other half remains on the ground
If this is possible you could lift up one half and carefully place something like a “furniture mover” or something that allows you to put something between the “feet” of the couch and the floor that has one side with a smooth surface and the other side making contact with the feet a surface that would provide grip. Once you pick up one side and place a mover under each foot you then lift the other side and place the two movers under the remaining two feet. Now with all the feet of the couch now on the movers you can easily push the couch to the other side of the room while not having to worry about scuffing the floor
The example above is a solution that would take perhaps a little bit of planning ahead or creative thinking but some may just accept they do not have another to assist in lifting the couch and try to “walk” the couch by lifting up one side at a time and moving one half closer to the desired location and then repeating the process by alternating this method from one half of the couch to the other until you have walked the couch to the other side of the room. This would be “Working hard”
Others may decide the only way to move the couch is to sacrifice the floor and live with any damage to the floors by pushing it with the feet of the couch as they are. This is an example of “Working hard not smart”.
Others may just give up the idea that they want to have the couch moved at all because it is not worth the fuss
If you really want something done than it is worth the fuss
But if it is not something you want enough than the hassle the task would require than you aren’t giving up but deciding that it isn’t worth your time or effort to do something that is not needed
An example of something that may not be needed would be there is a meal that you are preparing and you notice that one of the ingredients is not in your fridge
If the meal can be had without this ingredient than maybe just leaving this ingredient out for this meal is a better option than pausing the preparation of the meal in order to go to the store and pick up a single ingredient
It does not always mean that “worth the fuss” includes not getting what you want but maybe a version that still allows you to get what you want but not EXACTLY what you wanted. Pizza with pepperoni and Serrano peppers is delicious but Pizza without peppers is still Pizza. So if it was Pizza that you wanted and there is one less topping than desired, Pizza is still on the Menu if that is your desire
Sometimes what you wanted is something that if what is required to obtain it requires more than what you are willing to do than one way to look at this is, “I want this thing BUT I do not want to do the things required to obtain it MORE than I want this thing so if you have to pick between the thing you wanted and doing the things required to get it versus not doing the things required than you are saying that you don’t want that thing. You thought you “wanted” that thing but really you don’t because it is not “worth the fuss”
Work Smart not Hard
I will leave you with a quote from one of your ancestors, US President Abraham Lincoln
“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe”

Today I have a post about things that are real but only because we agree that it is real
One example of something that doesn’t really exist are borders on maps
The only real border would be the coast line of the land mass the countries are located
If you were to view North America from space you would not see lines that distinguish one state from another
You would see a portion of land surrounded by ocean water and there would be recognizable regions (Michigan for example because of the unique shape of the state highlighted by the Great Lakes)
You could figure out where some of the states that border Michigan begin but then you wouldn’t have another point of reference until the you reached a coast that would allow you to know where the majority of a State’s border would be
The fact that “Borders” are real is something that is true yet they only exist on maps
You can cross “State Lines” but these are really only observed while on highways mostly
You did not cross a line that exist on the land but the land is occupied by those who have designated specific territories (States) that have their own Government and elected Representatives of that Territory with unique laws to that territory
The States unified long ago and formed what is now known as the United States of America with a Federal (National) Government that has its own laws and elected Representatives
So borders are real but before the United States of America existed the land was already here without a National Government or States with borders
In the time previous to the English settling on the Atlantic coast and forming what became the 13 original colonies (The first 13 States) the same land was occupied by mostly Native Americans that had much smaller territories occupied by a Tribe of Natives that could look identical to the nearest Tribe yet have wildly different customs and speak a different language
The land also included other colonist from various countries however the majority of those that lived in what is now called the United States were Native Americans with the entire country as we know it today having a population less than 10% of our population in 2024
My point is there was a time that our “Real Borders” were not “Real” because they have yet to be established by those before us to later agree they were real
Another example of “Real Imaginary” things are Cities
A city is a concept that refers to a specific territory the same way a State or Country has a name as in Lansing the Capital City of Michigan, 1 of 50 states in the United States which is a Country in the Continent of North America, all of which can only historically and today be called one word that is true and that is “Land”
The land has been and always will be real however it may be previously or currently referred to by a word
One more example is the sound we make to say a word’s meaning
How we say the word “We” is the same exact sound the French make spelled “Oui” and it means “Yes” not referring to yourself and another when making the sound we spell “We”
Can you think of another example of something that is real and imaginary?

Today I want to share a post about the results of the recent Presidential Election that took place on November 04 2024
The American citizens elected Donald Trump to be the representative leader of our country (President and Head of the Executive Branch) and Commander In Chief (The highest rank in the US Military)
The Vice President (The person who is next in line if the President were not able to perform the duties required or if removed from office) is JD Vance
The current Vice President Kamala Harris was the runner up in this election and if she would have won she would have been the first woman to ever be elected as President of the United States of America
Donald Trump is a former president (He was the 45th President of the USA serving between 2016-2020) and is now the 45th and 47th President of the USA (Joe Biden was the 46th and our current President)
Although Donald Trump is a former President he is also known as a TV Personality (Hosted a show called “The Apprentice”) and a Real Estate Mogul (mogul is a wealthy and influential person)
Considering Trump has already been President there are certain questions that need not be considered when electing a new President like “How will this person do as President?” or “What will the incoming President’s approach to the job look like?”
People have a lot of different opinions about Donald Trump and not just Americans, he is one of the most famous people in the world
Let’s hope he does a good job

You have more influence over your health and happiness than you know
Pick your knows means you have the ability to expand your knowledge any direction you want
There will be somethings you learn that may not be completely voluntary but you can choose to expand beyond what you know in a way that is your desire
Do you like math?
Learn more math
Do you not like math?
Consider learning more of what might interest you (if anything) about math that involves concepts, history or important people that math includes
You may be surprised that something that involves math interest you in a way you can expand your knowledge of math that doesn’t include “math” itself and maybe cause you to give “MATH” another shot
The main point I am trying to make is you can learn what you want so that what you know is a mixture of learning by experience, learning by others and the knowledge you acquire through independent studying of something you choose
Eventually you may know more things you choose to know about than what you were taught and this will assist in more of a personalized data base from which you will form your opinions and beliefs that will shape your perspective
There is nothing wrong with learning from others
In my opinion it is important that your opinions and beliefs are formed through all that makes sense to be considered and the more data considered that is obtained from others the less that opinion or belief represents you
Learning is fun and also important if you want your opinions and beliefs to reflect YOUR experience and understanding of the world
