Today for you I have a post about the “message in a bottle”.

Before days of the internet, satellite phones and geo-tracking beacons there were context when people needed to be creative with respect to sending a message especially a message of necessity like “stranded on deserted island”.

In the example of someone stranded on a deserted island one might think of how to communicate to those potentially traveling near by that would not be able to see or hear them.

Perhaps they remembered that making a fire will bring attention because the smoke can be seen from miles away and a remote island on fire is either a natural occurrence or and probably likely enough to not be and that someone is on the island that is not known to be inhabited therefore attempting to signal to someone that they are on that island.

Perhaps they take it a step further and create smoke signals by covering the fire producing the smoke in a sequence that causes an unnatural smoke plume “the rising smoke” so that anyone observing would not only notice the smoke but notice it is man made. (I will go into smoke signals in more detail in another post).

The above tactics help when getting attention of someone nearby but what about someone far away?

If they found a glass bottle or a waterproof container that they can seal in a way that the contents remain dry, they can write a message, put the message in the container (bottle with cork to close it watertight) and throw that bottle into the sea so that it does not float back to the island but away from the island in any direction.

If it floats away in any direction in could float back to the island but if it doesn’t it will end up on a beach not on that island but that of another beach somewhere else potentially that will have someone passing by and notice the bottle.

If they see the bottle because it is sealed with a message, they might open it and if they do that person on the island may have someone on the way to look for them.

It is cool to see how creative people can be when they are motivated and or inspired.

What comes to mind today is the saying "birds of a feather, flock together" meaning we stick with our own and a commercial that is the inverse in a equally beautiful way when someone accepts that their feathers look the way they do because of not just what type of bird it is and will still treat them like one of those who are treated like them (you belong and they support).
