Today I am starting a new series for our blog that will be incorporating live music.

The idea for today is to capture with my phone a recording of me playing guitar.

What I am going to do is write a “Riff” which in guitar lingo means an idea. I am a guitar Noodler. Noodling on a guitar is playing the guitar with the only intention being playing the guitar and not any specific music. I plan on practicing more than noodling in 2025.

I will include more music in future post that I will write on the day the post goes live.

I remember my dad (your grandpa) playing guitar growing up and I ended up learning how to play guitar myself. Maybe you will end up learning an instrument. I hope you do.

Today I have a post about non verbal communication.

I have made previous post about AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE and that is a form of non verbal communication but ASL is a non verbal language with a “correct” or at least pre determined and agreed way of executing.

The type of non verbal communication I am posting about today is the kind where you do not know how to say what you want to say but you can use your hands and other various mechanisms to attempt to communicate to your intended recipient in hope that they might understand.

An example of this would be you are hungry and you want to tell someone this for the reason it may result in food. You might act as if you have a bowl of food in your hand and with one hand “hold” the imaginary bowl and use your other hand to “hold” an imaginary spoon and make the motion of the spoon going into the bowl and then to your mouth and begin to act as if you are chewing the imaginary food.

This is likely to be understood without saying a word.

The point of communicating in this way is the language you speak and the language of the other whom you are attempting to communicate with does not understand your language.

This does not prevent you from communicating.

What prevents you from communicating is the lack of effort. However there may be more complexed concepts that you have no way of confidently using your hands to represent the idea in your head to the capacity of what you might do with or without the assistance of a prop.

One example is what your idea of the universe is. You might be able to communicate in a way that the person says “Universe” but just because they understood the subject matter in a single word you were saying non verbally does not mean that they understand how you think and fee about the universe.

My point is this. Some things can be successfully communicated when not using the spoken or written word. Sometimes you might not be able to get your message to be understood (or understand another’s non verbal).

It does not mean you won’t get close enough to potentially get a desired result. The effort and commitment may allow the language barrier to not prevent your intention.

Today I have a post about something I was thinking about and this is the idea that we do not need numbers until you need math.

Imagine looking down at your hand as if you were observing your hand with that intention. You look at your hand and see one thing. You then move your fingers and that one thing is moving but if each finger can move separately or all at the same time this is a different observation while using your same hand as an example of what can experienced.

It was one thing and that one thing started moving and that what was moving was more than that one thing.

You do not need to know the concept of numbers, mathematics or quantity to know there is a difference in experience while observing your hand.

You do not need to describe “one” hand as if it was how many you were looking at. You do not need to know that there are “four” fingers and “one” thumb moving to tell that there is a difference between what it was you were looking at having different things that were moving. You do not need to know the name of what it was you were looking at that began to move or the names of the different things that were moving to know the difference that your hand includes your fingers but your fingers are also not your hand.

You could give a detailed description of this observation without using numbers but you would also be aware that it involved multiple things you could consider.

There are several concepts you might take away from this observation of your hand.

One concept is that of “Quantity” (an amount or number of something). By looking at your fingers on your hand you have an example of something that is more than one with the comparison of your hand after moving your fingers compared to before you began to move your fingers when initially observing your hand as a single object. Not that it just looked different but you could see more than just one thing moving knowing that each finger moving could be seen as moving different things even though they are attached to the same hand. If you were watching someone else do this experiment you could see the fingers in a way that without considering the attachment to the hand, if you were to say how many different things you observed moving you might not say only one.

Another concept would be what a “Description” (detailed information about something) is and how what is used to describe something is a reason that numbers can be used outside of Mathematics.

If there was a word for each number that was used in a way to describe what would represent a specific quantity, that could be the only reason that you would need that word. For example, this person is 4 years old and this person is 10 years old could be this person is “word” years old and this person is “different word” years old with those 2 words representing the amount of years that person is old.

Mathematics however also has a purpose. Although numbers can be used as part of a description they can also have a function that is different that a detailed description providing the information necessary to give you what would used in order to describe something.

For example a backyard that is 20 feet long and 20 feet wide has a “Area” of 400 square feet. You could say to someone that the backyard is 20 feet by 20 feet (20′ x 20′) and that could be a way to describe it but if someone needs to know the area of that yard you first need to know before you could say 400 square feet that you must multiply the length and width of the yard to provide that answer.

To describe a person in a black t shirt, you need know what a T shirt is and the color black before you could provide that description but there is no formula similar to the formula used to find the “Area” of something (Length multiplied by Width). You only to need to recall from memory what a T shirt is and what the color black looks like to use these words in a discription. The “Area” of something is information that does not utlilize the memory to recall what something always is to say what it is but is information that needs a formula in addition to the memory of how to apply that formula in order to provide as a description.

It is interesting how numbers can be used to represent quantity but they do not need to be.

Today I have a post I mentioned previously to expect about “MORSE CODE”.

I am a student of communication in a way. I study multiple languages as far as how to spell and pronounce words in other languages in addition to the structure of the languages as in how you use those words to form a sentence or when speaking. In addition to the various languages I am studying I am also studying music theory, mathematics which could be seen as languages that we could all understand. Furthermore I am studying computer code, mostly html and python which could be said to be the language of computers because it is the code that makes up the computer’s ability to “think”. Finally I am also studying American Sign Language, Morse Code and even dabble in Binary Code which is the actually method of how most computers actually understand the code used when programming.

Morse Code is the most recent language I have added to the mix and I like the idea that similar to learning the alphabet in Sign Language you only need to know the alphabet in order to be able to communicate because if you can spell it or read it, you can say it or understand it.

Below are some interesting facts about Morse Code.

Today I have a post about MAIL 📬

I have written hundreds of letters to you and also have written hundreds of post on our blog 🤩

Back in the day letters would be delivered by hand via mostly two ways. Someone would literally walk from one person sharing the message to the intended recipient and deliver the message by either saying the message or leave them with a written message. This person was known as the messenger.

Later the process would include the messenger traveling by horseback as well as by boat.

The US Postal service as well as other organizations would then begin to deliver multiple messages to various recipients on a single trip.

The process later included the use of electricity for the first time using Morse Code (more on this in tomorrow’s post) which sped up the ability to deliver messages over a long distance faster than horseback.

Later the ability to send e mail and text message made it possible to deliver a message from one to another in nearly the same time as if there was a face to face experience with no messenger required at least when compared to previous methods.

In some ways depending on how fast someone can compose a message and how fast someone can digest the message received, if the moment the message was sent the recipient was able to retrieve that message, the length of time for a message to be shared face to face could be actually longer❕

Today I have a post about personal challenges however not in the way you might think.

The term “Personal Challenge” often refers to a challenge/problem in one’s life. An example of a possible personal challenge could be an issue with an inability to pay monthly financial obligations with the amount of monthly income available. The example may be true for various reasons including not enough monthly income or mismanagement of monthly income.

The personal challenge has a few components of consideration. If the amount due to be paid each month is higher than the amount of monthly resources , the challenge includes a “goal” of finding a way to reduce the monthly financial obligations enough to be within the monthly income or to increase the amount of income to meet the obligations.

Let’s say the goal was achieved by decreasing monthly obligations and the challenge is no longer a problem.

However, challenges do not need to be problems. A personal challenge with a goal and no problem are the kind of personal challenges I am talking about. I will refer to these types of personal challenges as PC and I am a fan of these.

I like to include various PCs in my life to help me improve in various ways. A PC can be an extension of a former problem but the idea is if you do not meet the goal there is no problem therefore no reason to be upset.

I sometimes refer to the intention of achieving my PC goals as being MINDFUL.

I am currently practicing MINDFULNESS with health, fitness, education, communication, gratuity and finances just to name a few.

The PC may have a “deadline” or be open ended. Nearly all of my PCs are open ended meaning my intention is to continue challenging myself to grow when practicing MINDFULNESS every day.

I am a lifelong learner and I am loving it.

Today I have a post about the journey around the sun also known as one year.

I recently celebrated my birthday and I am one year older 🎂

It takes the earth 365 days to travel around (orbit) the sun. Each day the earth itself spins around 1 time each 24 hour period.

It’s interesting how we use the rotation of the earth and the earth orbiting the sun as a way to measure time. While the day and year makes sense being they are consistent and use a single reference whether it is one rotation or one orbit, the months are what seems to have been broken up based on the lunar cycle (moon).

The lunar cycle is observable from earth and perhaps historically each sunrise or sunset until the next sunrise or sunset could be considered a day. What is fascinating is how ancient civilizations figured out that it took 365 days for the earth to orbit the sun which wasn’t always known that it did.

The story goes that it took centuries to have enough information to say that first of all the earth orbited the sun and with the changes of the seasons and harvest there were patterns observed that led ancient humans to predict what days these changes would occur. In addition to natural patterns the stars were also used as a point of reference to use to observe patterns that contributed to the estimate of 365 days being itself a pattern.

Centuries after these claims were made through the advancement of mathematics and technology it was confirmed that it took 365.2422 days for the earth to orbit the sun. Pretty cool that they had such amazing accuracy thousands of years ago!
